Move over fedoras” fitted caps, and crocheted “get crafty” hats, a refreshing change of headwear is soon to hit the market: jockey hats. Created in various materials and designs such as paisley, plaids, even Hawaiian flowers, the street version of the real thing is sure to make a hit on the heads of youth culture this summer and fall.
Inspired by the hype of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont, which make up the Triple Crown, combined with the nation’s new fervor for horsing racing due to the extraordinary attention given to Big Brown and the poor fate of filly Eight Belles, jockey-helmet inspired hats have been picked up by a variety of trendsetting milliners and recontextualized for everyday wear.
At the D&A show earlier in the month in Los Angeles, Christy’s London, the legendary hat manufacturer since 1773, showcased their new collection of the jockey hats which generated a lot of attention from prospective buyers. Created in plaids with leather straps, or colorful florals and topped with pom pom tassels and tapered rims, the structure of the jockey hat looks like a sporty but more upscale, and of course equestrian, version of the page boy.
If Christy’s London and others are able to get them to market fast enough, expect this style to catch on quickly this summer. However, they also pair well with certain Fall/Winter ’08-09 styles particularly those heavy with plaids, low-tech outwear, upscale prep, and tailored jackets.
