Yesterday, June, 29, 2010, Hulu, the online downloading network for TV shows and video clips announced Hulu Plus -a subscription based model for getting full seasons of TV shows for $9.99 per month. It was an inevitable direction as the freebie network was attracting more and more viewers, particularly among youth culture based on our data and the upcoming Summer Study to be released early next month, since the number of eyeballs still didn’t support enough ad revenue.

We’re constantly wondering when old-school media will get a grasp that millions of viewers does not equal millions of dollars based on the antiquated model of advertising, especially when it comes to online entertainment, but it appears that Hulu is trying to go multi-platform, which is an important direction, especially for a new generation that’s growing up watching things on a variety of platforms.

This is perhaps the most interesting development with Hulu Plus in that it will eventually be available on iPad, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, Samsung’s Blu-Ray players, and Xbox 360. Unfortunately there’s been no mention of availability yet on Android which will definitely be a set back in terms of attracting youth culture of whom many have smart phones but not iPhones based on costs. In addition, while it’s good that viewers can eventually get a full range of TV shows on their mobile devices, it doesn’t help that AT&T has started to charge for data downloads.

The idea, according to Hulu chief officer Jason Kilar is to be able to watch your favorite show on a number of devices -perhaps starting on your TV, then your iPad, and iPhone while on the train ride home.

Top shows offered on Hulu.com include some goodies but oldies such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Grey’s Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, Saturday Night Live, X-Files, and Arrested Development, plus new shows by episode such as 30 Rock and Family Guy.
