We first mentioned Alice bands in our European Cred Reports from last summer as the prevalence of these skinny bands, which young people in the UK call “Alice” bands” (as in Alice in Wonderland), started gaining momentum as seen on the heads of festival goers.
However as Coachella Music and Arts Festival tends to be an indicator of new trends for summer season fashion, based on images from the polo fields of Indio, CA, April 25-27, it was clear that metallic headbands, Alice bands, colorful bandanas, and feathers are going to be a staple accessory on the heads of both guys and girls. Obviously they’re popular because they help keep hair in tact, but today they’re worn over bangs, not under bangs, and often come in bright neon colors or metallics which complete a style -especially if you’re wearing next to nothing because it’s so hot outside.
Last summer, while many people were scouring vintage and thrift stores for the perfect headband or Alice band, more brands today have caught onto the movement and are making them new. Particularly super thin rope Alice bands in neon colors and metallic gold headbands.
The other aspect of this look is that it’s part of the genderless movement in that guys wear them too. This also goes with the growing popularity of the recontextualized Rave Hippy style, especially if adorned with feathers, tassels, and flowers.
