The Metropolitan Museum of Art is warming up to feature an exhibition that showcases how music has inspired design in the show called PUNK: Chaos To Couture. While we’ve often noted that many fashion trends come from music and artists, it’s nice to see the recognition coming from the land of couture, including co-chair Anna Wintour, editor of Vogue.
However, in checking out the latest leaks from the Museum on what to expect from the show, the inspiration seems to be far more along the lines of actress Rooney Mara, who is also a co-chair and will be on hand for opening night gala May 6, 2013.
The exhibition takes a look down ‘70’s memory lane and the punk rock landscape of The Ramones, The Clash, and the Sex Pistols with more than 100 designs, according to the Costume Institute’s curator, Andrew Bolton, and the influences punk had on high fashion.
It’s fairly apparent that Rei Kawakubo for Comme des Garçons has a punk rock edge, but Karl Lagerfield for Chanel? On the right model, apparently yes. One might wonder whether this is yet another strategic move (similar to the growing number of masstige collaborations) to make high-end designers more applicable to today’s lifestyles, and of course Vogue along the way.
