Lourdes, a.k.a. Lola, Madonna’s daughter, lead blogger on the Material Girl blog and muse for the new collection with Macy’s.
Madonna’s upcoming release of her Material Girl collection for Macy’s on August 3 is sure to bring about another wave of 80’s retro styles among females (and males since things are so post-gender now). But what makes this launch particularly intriguing is that her daughter Lourdes, who isn’t allowed to speak to reporters, is blogging about it, and adding her opinions on fashion in general, on the MaterialGirl blog.
First, Madonna’s Material Girl collection is very much inspired by her 80’s iconic outfits of undergarments on top, lace leggings, denim short jackets, boy-friend shorts and jeans, gloves, crucifix necklaces, and a 2010 twist including tutus (think Hot Topic meets, well, Madonna). Studded Doc Martin looking boots are grunge-esque but modernized with brass, and outfits which as Lourdes puts it, include “80’s shorts you know the kind that makes your butt look kinda big, with a grunge-looking shirt tucked in. It’s kinda nerdy, but I love it..” The price range is also very lovable at a friendly $12-$40.
Tutus are a part of the Material Girl collection, a trend we’re seeing in our Street Reports as posted today.
When it comes to promoting the collection, Lourdes’ voice is perfect in terms of attracting a young, new buyer who may shop vintage part-time mixed with designer pieces on occasion.
Here’s straight from her blog:
” the 80’s are another huge obsession of mine, which is totally amazingly awesome because Material Girl HELLO! It’s like 80’s themed, which pretty much rocks, so yeah. I’m still in love with brogues or as some people call them “oxford shoes”. I haven’t found a good sandal so I’m on like a search right now.”
Short denim shorts and heavy accessories, bags–part of the Material Girl collection.
She goes on to completely diss the entire gladiator sandal movement which in her mind is so OVER .
“OK but no joke gladiator sandals are OUT. They came out in summer 2008 and I was like, ok those are really cute. Then 2009 comes around and people are still wearing them so I’m like, ok whatever it’s just a phase. BUT NOOOOO. Because good old 2010 is now coming along and people are STILL wearing them, and then I was just like OK NO! It’s been three years people COME ON!!!!!!!!! I’m just like what????”
Lourdes voice is a typical mix of text-speak and blogger stream of consciousness, which gives insight into youth culture in more ways than one.
Part of the promotion also includes a text campaign (of course) whereby lucky texters can meet the Material Girl on September 22, 2010.
